BubbleBead Filters
Bubblebead BBF filters were designed for use in tropical fish breeding systems where a filter capable of solids capture and biofiltration was needed to support high densities of fish. Disease isolation was considered critical so the individual units were designed to operate on airlift and all were cleaned by a central vacuum. This reduced the labour and protected the fish from rapid disease spread.
Bubblebead BBF Beadfilters function both as a solids capture device and a biofilter. They operate very much like a submerged rock bed or undergravel filter except that they are designed to facilitate cleaning.
BubbleBead BBF filters feature patented technology and their proven loading rates are based on university research and many years of practical use in the aquaculture industries.
The versatility of BubbleBead BBF filters has made them a leading choice for new installations and upgrades to existing systems where high loading capability and good water clarity are paramount.
BubbleBead Key Features:
- Biological and mechanical filtration in one unit
- Sparkling water clarity
- Removes fine solids to below 15 microns
- Highly efficient breakdown of wastes
- Massive effective surface area of special bead media for biological activity
- Flushes wastes away in minutes without upsetting biological activity
- Air-suction design - NO air blower required
Backwash Process:
On Manual models, the control valve is simply turned to ‘waste’ and the backwash process starts.
- On Hydraulic Valve models, the backwash starts automatically when the pump is turned off.
Model Model number refers to cubic feet of media |
Max. Feed Rate per day (Max. Koi load @1% feed rate) |
Max. Rec. FlowRate gph (lpm) |
Maximum Pond Volume Gallons (Litres) at maximum rec. flow rates 2 hour - turnover - 3 hour Standard Stock Light Stock |
Suggested Pump Size Pre-straining or pre-settlement is essential when using solids handling pumps |
Recommended UV for algae control at standard stock volume in full sun # |
BBF-1.5 1.5m high 0.59m dia. 70L backwash |
0.75 lbs. 340 gm (34 Kg) |
1,250 95 |
2,500 11,000 |
3,750 17,000 |
These models have Automatic Hydraulic Valve control of the backwash process and must be sited with the inlet above the adjacent pond level.
Maximum head of the pump should be at least 2.0 metres more than the working head or exceed 4.0 metres whichever is the higher figure
*BBF-5, 7, 9 When operating at maximum flow rates, at least 10% of the flow should bypass the filter and be directed back to the pond for circulation and aeration.
